test card

The Test Card Chair is a tribute to my dad who was a TV repairman when I was a little girl. The image of the Test Card on broken TV’s in my dad’s workshop was part of the visual landscape of my childhood.

Back then tellies with valves went wrong all the time, so I remember him being constantly on call and extremely popular; he was like one of the emergency services.

Families would sit around the blank screen in stunned silence and watch him miraculously restore life to the silent black box.

Pre-computer and iPhone, televisions were the only magic boxes we had and my dad was a magician.
